Improvement Ideas & Suggestions

Got a feature idea? An idea for a brand new watch face? Comments about someone else’s ideas? Leave it in the comments below. If it’s useful, interesting or sufficiently questionable, I’ll add it on this page for everyone discuss.

Please keep the discussion somewhat civil.

Ideas

  • IDEA: Improve existing icon sets
    • Colours need adjusting and unifying
      • Namely, by making the brown leather part darker – everything else will be more visible and vibrant on the watch face
    • Simplify some icons
  • IDEA: The arrow at the top of the sundial could be a bit more prominent
  • IDEA:  Seasonal changes to the watch face (small and subtle graphical changes)
    • Use watches location to define if the user is in the northern hemisphere, southern hemisphere, or X deg off the equator to define which graphical change the user’s watch gets
  • IDEA: Dynamic weather graphical changes based on current weather
    • Garmin says it’s snowing in the user’s location: Subtle snowfall effect
    • Garmin says it’s raining in the user’s location: Subtle rain effect
    • Garmin says someone’s pizzle is being yanked: Subtle pizzle yanking
    • NOTE: Bake in a safety guard of how old the weather observation is to ensure the watch isn’t showing effects when weather has changed
  • IDEA: Battery indicator
  • IDEA: Custom weather icons
    • NOTE: There are SO MANY different weather icons and weather states supported by Garmin. So, if I were to do these in custom KCD style I’d need to make 54 different icons. (So, some simplification would be needed. Or maybe, the overall mood effect would be a better solution rather than using the weather icons?)
  • IDEA: Create a completely custom font to save space
    • Additionally, to fix the bug where special characters do not work properly with certain lettering / glyphs that have accents on them etc.
  • IDEA: Additional Watch Face Versions
      • Simplified (Suitable for lower resolutions)
      • Meme-fied (Think Hansry… Bath houses… And the absolute carnage of sillyness that is the KCD community)
      • Hardcore Henry (Extremely Fitness Focused / Harsher Debuffs)
      • Specifically colour themed watches to match other apparel / looks

Suggestions Received

  • SUGGESTION: Next Alarm Time Icon / Graphic / Dial
    • Dynamic visualisation of when the next alarm is
    • NOTE: Currently dependent on Garmin providing an update
    • NOTE: A simple on/off icon is currently included in the test build – but I will leave this as a suggestion here as a reminder, in case it’d be possible to do a proper time-based next alarm icon at some point which would be a lot more elaborate and nicer

Being Worked On

  • Buff System’s visual and functional improvements
    • A rework of the buff system. Taking it from buff / off / debuff (3 states) with round gems shown next to the icons, to 7 states in total with a 3-bar layout between the icons and the number related to the icon.
    • With the 3-bar layout, users get more context into the “how well and how bad” one is doing on the already 3 ‘buffified states’:
      • Rest and Recovery
      • Daily Activity
      • Stress

A brief explanation:

The buff/debuff system has been reworked into a simple three-stage indicator for Recovery, Activity and Stress.

Each stat now has three small slots beneath its icon. Most of the time they stay dark and unobtrusive. As a positive or negative state becomes stronger, the slots light up progressively in blue for buffs or red for debuffs.

So instead of a single on/off icon, you can now see at a glance whether something is a mild effect, a stronger one, or an extreme state.

It keeps the same underlying ideas as before, but makes the whole system much easier to read on the watch.

Hi all! While I already have my own long list of ideas and things that I’m working on… If you have an idea, or feedback of the actual watch faces whilst they are in use, do let me know here! Interested to hear any and all constructive feedback, and improvement ideas that may or may not be possible to implement.

Obviously, a lot of these will take time, and potentially will never come to fruition. But… It’s always nice to dream.

One thing I really like about some other faces is that it tells you when your next alarm is going to go off. I think this could integrate really well with a little icon on or adjacent to the dial around the outside of the face. It could be the hand from the game that is used to choose when to sleep or wait until, or maybe a little rooster (though that only makes sense for morning alarms).
This would be a pretty great feature for me so I hope it can be added sometime.
    Thanks!

Hi Vemin! Thanks for the comment and the idea!

And, that is actually an excellent idea.

I had a quick look, and annoyingly this is something that Garmin uses on its own watch faces… But doesn’t allow developers to see? 🙁
      https://forums.garmin.com/developer/connect-iq/i/bug-reports/alarm-data-in-watchface-context

I will put this on the board, but until some value supported by Garmin in suddenly introduced and updated, or another workaround thought of – it’ll be on hold for now unfortunately.

Somehow I’m both surprised and not. Thanks for looking into it anyway. Perhaps one day then…

Potentially a fairly labour intensive suggestion here, but I believe you can create a secondary watch face that you can dynamically switch to with a gesture. I have an example here: https://apps.garmin.com/apps/ae1d98ae-a812-4677-b55f-d3a134ac283d?tid=1 . I’m not sure if this is feasible or would require an entire rewrite, but if you’re struggling with fitting all the things into one face that you like without cluttering, being able to switch things like this may be quite helpful.

Another random and probably unhelpful idea:

    Add KCD based stats
    – “Today you walked the distance from Rattay to Talmberg”
    – “You climbed enough stairs to go up the Sasau Monastery 4 times”
